Been awhile
I visited Montreal 1977. My friend Sandy and I spent a long 4th of July weekend here.
A couple of impressions linger.
1) Quebec Province and Canada were in a serious Separation battle. Thus, as a point of honor, Québécois refused to speak English during the 3 days we visited. Besides English, Sandy spoke a little Polish and I had barrio Spanish - we spent lots of time lost; until we went into a bar and suddenly the young women became the toast of Old Town.
2) We visited the Iranian Pavilion at the Man and His World exhibit. I was on fire to visit Iran. I begin saving $ for the trip. Obviously i remained ignorant of world affairs by '79 Khomeini assumed leadership. No going to Iran.
Now it's 2023, we're planning a New England trip to check in with Fam and watch a couple of Grandson's football games. Looking at the map; we decided to go to Montreal. No other reason other than it's about a 5 hr drive - why not?
Flew to Bradley, Hartford, CT, picked up our rental car. Had a day to go to the family cemetery, leaving flowers and then to Hebron, catching up with friends. Friday we drove to our B&B in Oakland, Maine. Pressey B&B takes a little adjusting. My first take, opening the door was "I'm sleeping in the car! Did you actually read reviews?" Venturing further into a rather cavernous abode, it opened up into a large apartment overlooking Messalonskee Lake.
The owner, Nichole, was charming, high energy. Really, really, really into holiday (any holiday) decorating. The main room was done up in my least favorite - Halloween.
Kim, Laura and Dean arrived from the Boston area. We had a meet and greet at a terrific Greek restaurant.
Saturday was Game Day. Trinity played Colby. We wore our "undefeated" shirts (I always have a moment of "what if I'm jinxing Matt?" but went for broke as it's the only shirt i brought.)
I'm endlessly fascinated by game day tail gating. We met familiar faces as well as new ones. Everyone always makes us feel welcome. Laura and Dean bring the best food. I usually hang around the cooler, checking to see if she brought the Bark. I know to get my share before Matt arrives.
Shaky 1st half, with our man Matt holding it together. Trinity made necessary adjustments to come back stong. Matt set a career-high with four field goals. He converted attempts from 21 yards, 24 yards, 29 yards, and 42 yards out. His first three field goals came in the first two quarters to help Trinty climb out of a 7-0 hole and take a 9-7 lead at the break. He was also 4-for-4 in PATs. Thrilled is an understatement!
It was worth the trip. Next stop Montreal and then back to Hartford for next week's game with Amherst.
